Coach Maciej Skorza press conference after the match against Niigata

2024 Meiji Yasuda J1 League Round 38 match Albirex Niigata [MATCH PARTNER Mitsubishi Motors] Post-match comments

"Firstly, I would like to thank the players for their performances today, including the retirements of Shinzo (Koroki) and Tomoya (Tomoya UGAJIN), and the participation of Bryan Linssen, who is leaving the club. Shinzo Koroki in particular was a professional player with the best performances and character that I have seen in my career as a coach.

And I apologize for starting off on this topic, but I'm grateful for Shinzo's contributions to the Reds to date, for working with him last year, and for fighting alongside him through these difficult three months this year.

Regarding today's match, I think we had good game control, but I wish we could have played a little quicker in the build-up.

Also, they were a little slow in their decisions when they entered the final third, and I wish they had been a little braver. However, there were also moments when they played with good tempo, such as Shinzo's chance in the first half. During those times, they were able to react well even when they lost the ball.

In the second half, I thought we would have more space and more chances, but that didn't happen. We didn't have many chances in the second half, but we did have a chance when Shinzo passed it to (Haraguchi) Genki, and I think that if (Maeda) Naoki had played a little more calmly after that, it could have led to better opportunities.

"We had hoped to send off Shinzo, Brian (Linssen) and Uga with a victory in front of a full house of fans and supporters on this important day, so it's a disappointing result."

[Question and Answer Session]
(Excluding the match against Kawasaki Frontale, you have played 10 games, but failed to score in 6 of them. I think it will be difficult to increase your points in the league like this. I think the current situation is similar to last year, where you are conceding few goals but are also unable to score. In order to overcome this situation, what areas do you want to focus on during the off-season and next year's training camp?)
"The answer is simple - we need to train harder. As you said, today's match was representative of where we are now. The past three months since I came to Japan have been crazy. There have been matches where we played well under great pressure, such as the match against Sanfrecce Hiroshima. And there have been times when we felt like we were moving in the right direction, but then we played very poorly. The lack of consistency in certain areas has been a challenge for me.

I would like to make a firm statement about the lineup once the members for next season have been decided. I think we can start preparing from there, but considering the type of football we are trying to play next season, we need to acquire players with characteristics that fit that. And next season, we want to gather the best players for the Reds and improve our performance.

"I don't think our current performance is just because we're not scoring enough goals. We also lack stability and consistency in other areas, so we need to improve that."

(What style will you be using next season? What are your goals?)
"I want to make the team into the top three in the J.League and compete in the J.League. This season, as was the case last year, I think it is also necessary to look at which teams have been successful in the J.League and incorporate elements of those teams.

And the team I want to build is one that can control the game. A team that can play while building up more effectively than now. And when I think about what we need for next season, there are some areas that we have been able to improve in the last three months. For example, our reaction to switching when we lose the ball. We have also improved our risk management during attacks, and I think we have improved our cooperation in zone defense. And I think it is important to control the game in a balanced way for the entire 90 minutes.

(At your inauguration press conference, you proposed taking Shinzo Koroki to the FIFA Club World Cup in a special position. What about that?)
"He has a great memory. We struggled a bit at the start of last year, but after that Shinzo got more opportunities to play and scored important goals, and he also scored a great goal in the AFC Champions League. Shinzo himself struggled a bit in the preseason, but after that he brought such great things to the team and is a great player.

And we will miss Shinzo and Uga not only on the pitch, but also as people who create team spirit in the dressing room."

"I would like to thank you all for the past three months. Thank you. It was a difficult time, but I believe it has taught us some lessons for next season. I would also like to say to you all, 'Thank you for your hard work' as journalists. I hope next season will be a good one for you all as well. Thank you."
