Matsuo: "I just want the team to win"

On the 11th, after the Meiji Yasuda J1 League Round 26 match against Sagan Tosu, Yusuke Matsuo reflected on his goals and the content of the match.

"The coach told me he wanted me to make an impact as a substitute, and I think I did make a small impact, but there were also situations where we could have scored one or two more goals, so I want to score in those situations and help the team win."

(What about the goal?)
"I think it's good that my body has regained its sharpness. Up until now, I'd thought that I just needed to increase my speed, but we talked about first looking at my opponent and, if possible, going a little further inside, so with that image in mind, I slowed down once, but my opponent didn't cut in very far vertically, so I just went for it. It was only for a moment, but I think that being able to do a little bit of that, which led to me getting into that area. I'm currently working on improving by looking at video with the coaching staff, so I hope to see more scenes like this.

We haven't had many vertical shots recently, so in that sense, it feels like a nostalgic feeling is returning. If we can create more of these kinds of shots as a team, I think we'll be able to get closer to the goal."

(But it was a shot from a tight angle?)
"Every goalkeeper has their own habits. Because they're good goalkeepers, they block almost every possible opportunity, so it's common to see the ball open between the legs. I'm glad I was able to aim for that spot. I've scored plenty of shots like that up until now, so I was able to just imagine what kind of action I would take and relax and take the shot, which was great."

(I think it was a shot that could serve as a catalyst for the future.)
"I wasn't moving very well in the Hokkaido Consadole Sapporo match, but I felt like I could move a little better in the Newcastle United match, so I've been getting into shape through individual training and other things. I've learned that doing individual things in addition to team training helps me get into shape, so I'd like to continue doing that and improve my condition by another level."

(There was also a close call where you were one-on-one with the goalkeeper.)
"There were some parts that were a little different from how I imagined, but it was only for a moment, and I'll look back on it after watching the video."
