Homma: "There's no time to look down. I want to show my skills with results."
On the 30th, after the 37th Meiji Yasuda J1 League match Avispa Fukuoka, Shion Homma spoke about his thoughts on playing for the first time in a long time and his enthusiasm for the final match against his former club.
"It was a chance I was given after a long time without having much playing time, so I wanted to make a difference in the offensive part. Moreover, since we were behind in the match, I went on to play hoping that I could lead the team to victory with a goal or an assist, but I missed a scoring opportunity at the end and I really felt that I lacked skill. It was a question of whether I could have scored or not, but if I don't score those scoring opportunities, I won't be able to go up. It's not enough to just let it go by saying that I missed it, but I need to make more use of this experience from now on, otherwise it will be meaningless.
I feel really sorry for my teammates and the fans and supporters, but I just have to move on. I'll do my best in practice so that I can score next time."
(I think the appeal was there.)
"I am being evaluated by the people around me, and I am grateful if they think so, but right now all I can think about is the moment I missed the ball at the end. If I don't focus more on that one point, that one assist, that one goal, rather than on other plays, I don't think I will be able to play in games with Urawa Reds, who have such a deep player base. I think I have found an area to improve, which is the quality of my finishing. I want people to see how much I can give back to the team from now on. I want people to have high expectations of me in the future."
(In front of the goal, you tried to move in from the side to get the ball to the center, or to draw it out, but it was hard to get the ball out.)
"I think I need to become an overwhelming player. I think it's easier to collect the ball if you're a central player on the team, but I think there's a little bit of uncertainty about even passing the ball to a player like me who hasn't shown anything yet. I really think the only way to show that is through results. I want to show the kind of play that gives the players peace of mind when they leave the ball to the other player. I have a lot of issues to work on."
(Was the last shot too far inside?)
"You could say I went in too far, my stride wasn't right, and I wasn't able to use my other foot to control the short bounce and hit it. It's really a lack of technique. It may be easy, but if you don't practice things like that, it will end up like that in the game. I'm really disappointed now. But it's over now, and I don't have time to look down, so if I get another chance, I want to show our fans and supporters a result. Right now, I'm filled with feelings of regret that we lost points because of me."
(The final game will be against his former club Albirex Niigata?)
"I would like to stay with Niigata, but if I don't produce results, my career as a soccer player will be over. I have no choice but to give it my all. It would be rude not to give it my all, and it's hard to put into words, but all I can say is that if I'm given the chance, I'll do my best."
(I imagine there are some difficult times in promoting the game.)
"It's difficult, but everyone is fighting for a position. The players who have won their spots are playing this season. They've all won their spots through ability, so it's difficult, but we can't just keep saying that. I think we have no choice but to do it."
