Sakai: “It’s easy to give up, but I don’t want to give up.”

On the 29th, after the match against Yokohama FC in Round 29 of the Meiji Yasuda Life J1 League [MATCH PARTNER Mitsubishi Heavy Industries], Hiroki Sakai talked about his impressions of the match and his thoughts on the remaining 5 games of this season's J1 League.

(How do you perceive the result of 1 point?)
``No one is satisfied with this result, but it's over, so we have to quickly switch things up and move on to the next one. We still have many valuable tournaments left. I think it's important to figure out how to prepare ourselves and move forward."

(It looked like things didn't go well in the first half, but how was it on the pitch?)
“I think Yokohama FC came in with a lot of momentum, and I got the impression that the foreign players up front played well.I think we had our faults too, but their play was honestly good as well. I think there are fluctuations in the development of the game, so if we had been able to control the timing well, I think we would have been able to get into the flow. Conceding a goal there ruined our plan for this game. I think that's a big reason."

(I think it was good that Yokohama FC joined the team, but I think the Reds were tired and didn't have the stamina to counter them.)
“I think there were a lot of unlucky moments. The ball was handed over to the opponent because we couldn’t get it in midfield, and when we conceded a goal, it looked like (Alexander) Scholz was losing sight of the ball. I scored it. I think it was a great shot. I think there were a lot of factors in the first half that led to the score being 0-1. We knew where the spaces were, but we didn't know how to take advantage of them as quickly as possible. I couldn't find out that. If we had been four or five minutes earlier, I think we wouldn't have conceded a goal."

(I think there were many difficult situations, such as the opponent tightening their defense even after catching up with the penalty kick. How did you think while playing?)
“We played with a lot of momentum, almost to the point of going overboard, but the opponent was strong and we didn’t give up mentally. It was difficult, but if you look at today’s performance calmly, I think 1-1 was a fair score. .Of course we wanted to win, and it's very frustrating, but overall I think 1 point was appropriate. We need to make an effort to turn this into 3 points. From here on, we'll take things one step at a time. I have to give up. It's easy to give up, but I don't want to. I'll do my best."
