Per-Mathias Hoegmo, manager, Kyoto match post-match press conference
Meiji Yasuda J1 League, Section 14 against Kyoto Sanga F.C. [MATCH PARTNER RDC] Post-match comments
We needed to get off to a good start because we were playing against a team that had lost three games in a row and was desperate for a point. And against a team that presses hard, it is important to move the ball well. It was from this movement of the ball that (Yasui) Kaito's great shot was born.
In the second half, I think we found more and more space. In the second half, we started to have more and more space, and two good goals were scored there, too, from great play.
It is very important to break the first press, and Ayumu (Ohata) and Hiro (Hirokazu Ishihara) did it in a good way, so we were able to create 2-on-1 situations after that. I think it was also important to take the ball to the opposite side after taking it away from the opponent.
Especially in the second half, there were many occasions when we took the ball on the left and moved it to the right, creating chances by running up the field. However, in the first half, we had chances on the counter, so we had to make the most of them.
We scored three goals without conceding a goal, and moreover, the players who came off the bench and onto the pitch were able to show themselves well. I want to commend the players, and I think they showed the depth of their lineup.
[Q&A.
(Samuel Gustafson What was the reason for the player's absence and how did you manage to play such a quality game without him?)
He had a hip injury in the Yokohama F・Marinos game and it got worse in the Albirex Niigata game. After the Niigata game, he was in a lot of pain, so we examined him. The result of the examination did not indicate that there was anything dangerous or serious, but this time I took it very seriously.
Today, Tomo (Tomoaki Okubo) was not too serious as well as Samuel (Gustafsson), but he had some symptoms in his knee, so we rested him. In the absence of those two, I think (Yasui) Kaito did a good job. I think his positioning when defending was good, he showed strength, and when he had the ball, he played simply.
I also think that the left side of the team was very good. We played with Ayumu (Ohata) at sideback and Ryoma (Watanabe) at inside half, and Ryoma showed his quality as an inside half.
Because of the new relationship, there were some moments in the first half when we struggled a little, but I think we got better as time went on.
(Do you think you have made progress since the beginning of the season in terms of being able to calmly find your teammates when pressed?)
(Do you think you have made progress since the beginning of the season in being able to calmly find your teammates when you are pressed? And when Hiro (Hirokazu Ishihara), Ayumu, and Ryoma are playing at sideback, I think they are able to play calmly to break the opponents' press.
In the J-League, many teams try to press high, so I think it is very important to play off that press. There is also a way to connect with the opposition, but I think it is also important to aim for the back of the field. I think we are gradually moving in the right direction, but there are still areas where we can improve.
(In the last three games, you have played very openly, and your opponents have been easy to stretch out and create space.)
Today we played a team that tries to press the most high press in the J-League, three or four high presses, but if we can break through that, we will be very open. But I think we saw in the second half that when we broke that, we became very open. And I think it is important to have confidence in our own relationship, in the space they leave open, and also in one-on-one play. The players are trying bravely at practice, so I think we are making positive things in attack, including in games."
