Sekine: "It's important to reap the rewards as a team"
On the 22nd, after the Meiji Yasuda J1 League 28th round match Kawasaki Frontale [MATCH PARTNER Mitsubishi Heavy Industries], Takahiro Sekine spoke about his thoughts on the match, which resumed in the second half.
(Did you feel different at the start of the game today?)
"It was difficult to finish the game in 45 minutes. I wanted to score from the beginning, but as the coach said, we didn't start well and were overwhelmed by the opponent's momentum."
(What about shots from set pieces?)
"That wasn't actually a shot. I was planning to pass the ball to (Ohata) Ayumu at the end, and it was a play I had practiced the day before. I wasn't being marked very much, so I made the decision."
(Was it difficult to fight because you had a one-point lead?)
"It was clear to us that if we could keep the score at zero, we would win. That has been one of our strengths recently, and we were confident about it."
(The forward line was moving quite fluidly while building up from the back.)
"Rather than staying on the side, I was conscious of taking a position in the middle and making plays that would make the most of the fullbacks. Also, Samuel (Gustafsson) was looking at me at the right time, so I was able to pass it to Brian (Linssen) with one touch and pass it to (Watanabe) Ryoma. Even though I was aiming for it, it was just by chance in the combination, so I thought it would be good if we could intentionally match it with the players up front."
(It's a 45-minute match. How does it go?)
"Just like our opponents, we were able to use our forward momentum without thinking, so I think in that respect we were able to play a different style of football."
(Does committing a foul close to your own penalty area mean you're being pushed back?)
"I knew we would definitely be pushed back, and Kawasaki has great quality in the final third, so I knew how difficult that would be."
(2 games left, what's the best way to end it?)
"The coach said that he would try out a variety of players, so I think it's possible for anyone to play. Personally, I want to finish with a good feeling, and as a team, I hope we can finish in a way that has given us some positive results."
